If lice are found, all close contacts of the infected person should be checked as well.
- Lice can be treated with both over-the- counter or prescription medications.
- Before applying medication, remove all clothing that could become wet or stained.
- Follow instructions as directed for applying the medication.
- Lice and nits can be combed out of hair with a nit comb or other fine-toothed comb.
- It is recommended to do this on washed and still wet hair.
- Detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb before removal.
- Use nit or other fine-toothed comb to remove lice and nits (eggs).
- Clean the combs to remove lice and other debris.
- After each treatment continue to look and comb for lice and nits every 2-3 days for the following 2-3 weeks until all lice and nits are removed.
- Cleaning clothing and furniture used of an infected person
- Machine wash and dry clothes, blankets, sheets, etc. used by an infected individual on high heat. If an item cannot be washed, place it in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks.
- Vacuum furniture where an infected person sat or lay.
- Disinfect combs and brushes used by the infected person.
