• Use only UL approved appliances.
• Do not overload outlets.
• Use fused multi-strips with an on/off switch and built-in circuit breaker. Use only one multi-strip per outlet.

• Practice fire drills in the home.
• Have two ways out of each room.
• Bedrooms or sleeping areas are not allowed in basements unless there are two means of escape.
• Windows and doors must be operable (latch, open & close).
• Have a designated meeting place outside.

Fire Extinguishers

Portable fire extinguishers can be effective in fighting only small, contained fires. Extinguishers are labeled A, B, or C according to the type of fire for which they can be effective. A good household fire extinguisher is an A-B-C type. A is for Common Combustible fires, B is for Flammable Liquid and Cooking fires, and C is for Energized Electrical fires. Only one extinguisher is needed for all of these types of fires.
Never fight a small, contained fire unless you know how to use the fire extinguisher. Each fire extinguisher has directions on the front and a recommended safe distance when using it. Use the mounting bracket and affix the fire extinguisher to a wall or a cupboard in an easily accessible location you will remember. Before using a portable extinguisher, be sure the fire department has been called and that everyone else has left the fire area. Also, be sure you have your back to a safe, unobstructed exit. If someone else is available, ask him or her to help. If the fire begins to spread, leave the area immediately and wait for the fire department to arrive.

Heating Equipment

• Keep combustibles (papers, drapes, etc.) at least three feet away from all space heaters and furnaces.
• Change furnace filters regularly.
• Chimneys and vents should be kept in good repair; they should not have holes or corrosion.

Spring-cleaning is not only a good habit, but it also is a good fire prevention tool. Clutter in basements and garages burns quickly and can get in the way of firefighters trying to extinguish a fire. Any leftover product should be stored until used or given to someone who can use it, if possible.
