Emergency Medical Services is supervised by the deputy chief of EMS, with the assistance of a station captain. The department has a tiered EMS system in which fire apparatus "first" respond with an ambulance on calls of a more serious nature.  All of the protective employees (102) are certified to provide emergency medical care at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level, and approximately two-thirds are trained to the advanced level of Paramedic.  Department fire apparatus respond with a mixture of EMTs and/or paramedics. The four front-line ambulances are staffed with a minimum of two paramedics.  Three reserve ambulances are staffed by fire apparatus personnel if needed.  Department paramedics are routinely certified in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), and DFAM (Drug Facilitated Airway Management).  The department’s medical director is Dr. Ethan Young.

Fire apparatus are equipped with basic EMS equipment, as well as an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and NVA (Non-Visualized Airway).  Ambulances are equipped with advanced EMS equipment including a Lifepak 15 cardiac monitor, portable ventilator, and 32 different medications.

There are approximately 9,200 requests for ambulance assistance each year.  Designated emergency medical personnel and equipment are placed at all six fire stations.  The City contracts with 14 surrounding entities outside the city limits to provide EMS delivery, so the total area covered is approximately 482 square miles.

Emergency medical personnel also work with suppression personnel to routinely inspect local businesses and apartment buildings for fire hazards and safety violations.

There is close cooperation with Mayo and Marshfield Hospitals for EMS training and to maintain and improve the service to the community. Emergency medical personnel respond to requests for emergency medical aid, fire calls, rescue calls, and whenever their special skills are needed.
