Pre-School Aquatics

PARENT/CHILD LEVEL 1
Goal: Familiarize children with water and teach swimming readiness skills including: learning to ask for permission before entering the water; learning how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner; feeling comfortable in the water; exploring submerging the mouth, nose, and eyes in the water; blowing bubbles; exploring buoyancy on the front and back; changing body position in the water; learning basic water safety rules and how to avoid hazards around the home; understanding the importance of wearing a life jacket and experience wearing one in the water; learning how to stay safe in, on, and around the water, including: how to stay safe in the sun, avoid recreational water illnesses, learning how to call for help, and the importance of knowing First Aid and CPR. Provides parents with safety information and techniques they can use to help their children in the water.  An adult is REQUIRED to participate in the water with each child.
Age: 6 months - 4 years

PARENT/CHILD LEVEL 2
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Parent Child Level1 or the participant confidently explores the water (on their front and back) and submerges the mouth, eyes, and nose.
Goal: Learning to expect adult supervision when near the water; learning more ways to enter and exit the water safely; submerging completely in a rhythmic pattern; gliding on the front and back with assistance; performing combined strokes on front and back with assistance; changing position from front to back; learning about the importance of wearing a life jacket and experience wearing one; learning how to stay safe in and around various aquatic environments; learning how to recognize an emergency, call for help and perform simple non-swimming assists; learning how to avoid overexposure to direct sunlight; learning to look carefully before entering the water; learning what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation. Provides parents with safety information and techniques they can use to help their children in the water.  An adult is REQUIRED to participate in the water with each child.
Age: 6 months-4 years

OTTER
Prerequisites: Meet the minimum age.
Goal: Encourages the development of appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills.  With support and/or assistance, children learn skills including: entering and exiting the water; blowing bubbles; submerging eyes, nose, and mouth; opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged objects; front and back glides; recovering to a vertical position; rolling over front to back and back to front; treading water using arm actions; beginner arm and leg actions on front and back; combined strokes on front and back.
Age: 4-5 years

SEAL
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Otter (American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics Level 1) or be able to: 1) Independently enter the water, travel 5 yards, submerge to the mouth and blow bubbles for three seconds, then safely exit the water. 2) Glide on front with eyes in the water, for two body lengths, roll to back and float for 3 seconds and recover to vertical.
Goal: Furthering the development of basic aquatic skills and with increasing independence, children complete skills such as: stepping into the water; safely exiting the water; bobbing; opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects; front and back floats and glides; recovering to vertical; rolling from front to back and back to front; treading water using arms and legs; combined stroke on front and back; finning arm action on back.
Age: 4-5 years

DOLPHIN
Prerequisites:
Successfully complete Seal (American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics Level 2), or be able to 1) Glide on front-with face in the water, for 2 body lengths, roll to back, float for 5 seconds, and recover; 2) Glide on back for 2 body lengths, roll to front, float for 5 seconds, with face in the water, and recover, with assistance; 3) Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 5 seconds, roll to front, and swim on front for 3 body lengths.
Goal: Promoting the development of children’s independence, swimming proficiency and understanding of water safety, children master skills involving: jumping in; fully submerging and holding breath; bobbing; front, jellyfish, and tuck float; recovering to vertical; back float and glide; rotary breathing; changing direction while swimming; treading water with arms and legs; swimming on front and back; finning arm action on back.
Age: 4-5 years

 

Learn to Swim (AGES 6 & OLDER)

LEVEL 1
Goal:
Learn the base material for skills advanced upon throughout Learn-to-Swim levels. Develop positive attitudes, effective swimming habits and knowledge in water safety.  Skills include: entering and exiting the water; blowing bubbles through mouth and nose; opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged objects; bobbing; back floats; front and back glides; recovering to a vertical position; rolling from front to back and back to front; treading water using arm and hand actions; beginner arm and leg actions on front and back; combined stroke on front and back.

LEVEL 2
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Level 1 or be able to: 1) Enter the water safely, travel 5 yards, bob 5 times and safely exit; 2) Glide on front for 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds (assistance available), and recover to vertical.
Goal: Stepping or jumping in from the side; fully submerging and holding breath; bobbing; opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged objects; front, back, jellyfish and tuck floats; front and back glides; rolling over from front to back and back to front; recovering to vertical; rotary breathing; changing direction while swimming; treading water using arm and leg actions; combined stroke on front and back; finning arm action.

LEVEL 3
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Level 2 or be able to: 1) Step into chest-deep water, move into treading or a front float for 15 seconds, swim on front and/or back for 5 body lengths, and return to a vertical position; 2) Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front and recover to a vertical position; 3) Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front and continue swimming for 5 body lengths.
Goal:
Jumping from the side; entering the water head first from sitting and kneeling positions; bobbing to safety; turn in one full circle while vertical; rotary breathing; survival floating; back floating in deep water; changing positions from vertical to horizontal on front and back; treading water with arms and legs; flutter, scissor, dolphin, and breaststroke kicks on front; front crawl and the elementary back stroke.

LEVEL 4
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Level 3 or be able to: 1) Jump into deep water from the side, recover to the surface, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotate 1 full turn, level off, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards, then exit the water.  2) Push off in a streamline position, and then swim front crawl and elementary backstroke for 15 yards, then exit the water.
Goal:
Entering head first from the side in compact and stride positions; swimming under water; feet first surface dives; survival swimming; front and backstroke open turns; treading water with using 2 different kicks; flutter and dolphin kick on back, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.

LEVEL 5
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Level 4 or be able to: 1) Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards; 2) Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.  3) Submerge and swim 3-5 body lengths underwater without hyperventilating, then return to the surface and exit the water.
Goal:
Shallow angle dive from the side, glide, and begin a front stroke; tuck and pike surface dives; front and back flip turns; treading; treading with only legs; front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke; sculling.

LEVEL 6
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Level 5 or be able to: 1) Perform a shallow angle dive into deep water, using appropriate and efficient turning styles swim front crawl for 50 yards, and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards; 2) Using appropriate and efficient turning styles swim breaststroke for 25 yards, and swim back crawl for 25 yards.
Goal:
Front/Back crawl open turns; front flip turn; bask stroke flip turn; sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly turns; treading water using only legs; Help and Huddle positions; tuck, pike and feet-first surface dives; surface dive and retrieve an object; back and survival floats; survival swim; advanced stroke techniques for front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.

Red Cross Certification Courses

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
This Red Cross course trains and certifies successful participants in  American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. The lifeguard certification requires a standard number of hours for classroom, pool, and online training.  Successful completion requires that participants are PRESENT FOR ALL CLASS SESSIONS; complete all online training  modules, attain 80% on the written exam and demonstrate proficiency in all skills.
Prerequisites:
      -Students must be 15 years old by the completion of this course.
      -The ability to swim at least 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing using 
          front crawl or breast stroke.
      -The ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
      -Successful completion of a timed event in 1 minute, 40 seconds. This event requires a participant to:
             1. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10  feet,
             2. retrieve a 10 pound object,
             3. surface and swim 20 yards on their back  with the object (both hands must remain on the object
                   throughout),
             4. exit the  water without using the ladder or steps.
Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive a Red Cross certificate that indicates  Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED and is valid for 2 years.
Materials: Students must possess  a copy of the Lifeguarding Manual released January 30, 2012. A free version of  the book may be downloaded at www.redcross.org. A print version of the book may  be purchased online at www.redcross.org  for approximately $32.00.

Refunds issued less than 7 days  before first class will be charged a $35.00 Red Cross Administrative Fee in addition to the $5.00 Parks and Recreation Administrative Fee.

LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE
This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional-level course. Upon successful completion candidates will renew their American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certification and will be certified to teach the following American Red Cross Courses: Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens. 
Prerequisites:
      1. Must be at least 17 years old.
      2. Possess current certification in one of the following:   
             -American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED    
             -American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional
              Rescuer    
             -American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards    
             -From another approved organization-call 715-839-5032 to determine eligibility.
      3. Successfully complete the Online Session for Lifeguarding Instructor course, which consists of the following
          prerequisites:    
            -Orientation to the American Red Cross    
            -Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor course    
            -Lifeguarding Instructor Precourse Exam
      4. Successfully complete the precourse skills session. The skill session will be held on the first day of class.
      5. Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructors Manual and Lifeguarding Participant Manual prior to the first scheduled
          class of the instructor course.
Certification Requirements:
      -Participants are PRESENT for ALL CLASSROOM and POOL sessions,
      -Satisfactorily complete all homework assignments,
      -Meet all pre-requisites prior to the course

WSI WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course provides students with many of the skills necessary to gain employment as a swimming instructor throughout the United States. During the course, participants will learn how to teach courses and presentations within the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. This program is taught in a blended learning format and requires a combination of classroom, pool, and online simulation training.
Throughout the course, students will:
      1. Gain an understanding of the Swimming and Water Safety Program and materials
      2. Learn to lead courses within the program utilizing the appropriate materials
      3. Practice conducting training sessions
      4. Develop the ability to properly assess and evaluate participants' progress.
Prerequisites:
      -Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
      -Successfully complete the precourse session, including demonstrating competency in the precourse swim skills
        evaluation. The skills evaluation requires participants to:
             1. Swim the following strokes consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 Stroke
                 Performance Criteria: Front Crawl (25 yds.), Back Crawl (25 yds.), Breaststroke (25yds),
                 Butterfly (15 yds.), Elementary Backstroke (25yds), and Sidestroke (25 yds.)
             2. Tread Water for 1 Minute
             3. Maintain position on their back in deep water for 1 minute
Certification Requirements:
      1. Complete the online Orientation to the Swimming and Water Safety Program, which includes the online
          Orientation to the American Red Cross.
      2. Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
      3. Successfully complete class activities, including all assigned online and the required practice-teaching
          assignments.
      4. Achieve a minimum score of 80 percent on the Water Safety Instructor course final written exam.
      5. Demonstrating and appropriate level of maturity throughout the course.
Upon successful completion of the instructor course, instructors will be able to print their transcripts that show completion of the Water Safety Instructor course from the American Red Cross Learning Center.
