The City’s five street sweepers will start to clean winter sand and debris from the streets as soon as weather permits in the spring. All sweepers will run daily until two full cycles are completed of the entire city. Starting April 13, sweepers may operate 16 hours per day, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to midnight, until all streets have been cleaned twice. There will also be additional operations periodically run at times between midnight and 8:00 a.m. during the spring clean-up in an effort to clean areas that are heavily parked. The continuation of the alternate side parking ordinance until May 1 helps in this spring clean-up task. The main arterial streets are swept first. The rest of the city is divided into four areas, and the order of sweeping is rotated every spring. The schedule for 2015 is as follows: 1) West, including Third Ward, 2) North, 3) East Side, and 4) South.
One full sweeping cycle is completed in the fall. Fall clean-up is performed to prevent leaves from plugging storm inlets and storm sewers and normally begins at the end of September. A second shift may be added at some point when the volume of leaves is at its highest.
Besides the spring and fall clean-up operations, street sweepers sweep the entire city multiple times during the summer. Additionally, there are watershed areas within the city that are swept more frequently to meet DNR requirements.
