Haymarket Plaza

Update October 26, 2016

There is more news on the Haymarket Plaza project! The architect for the Confluence Arts Center, Malcolm Holzman, worked with City Staff earlier this year to develop the first concept, which incorporated the findings of the placemaking exercise, into a design for Haymarket Plaza. The first conceptual design was unveiled to the public in June 2016. This was a very important first step in moving from the concept phase of the plaza into design. The concept drawings can be seen here.  The design blends themes and adjacent buildings into a piazza style plaza. The design allows for a vast amount of plaza space adorned with some trees, a fountain area, and scalloped lookouts over the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa Rivers.

With the construction of the plaza not scheduled until 2018, the City wanted to give the citizens and stakeholders another option to consider for the plaza - a differing opinion from the first concept.  Garret Perry, one of the landscape architects who helped design Phoenix Park and South Barstow Street, was enlisted to create a preliminary second concept for the plaza. Garret was tasked with creating a plaza that was unique in its own right, yet still lending a tribute to Phoenix Park and the downtown streetscape scenes that he helped create.  The drawings for the second concept have now been finalized and can be viewed here.  The second design has created an urban plaza with flexible green space and has blended hardscape, lawn areas, some trees, and a trail along the river to view the confluence.

An open house is scheduled for Thursday, October 27th, from 4:30 pm – 8:00 pm at the Haymarket Landing Building to gather feedback for both options. Both plaza designs incorporate feedback from previous open houses and placemaking exercises but do so in different ways.  Staff is eager to get feedback from the public as to which concept will be the best theme for this very important area in downtown.

If you are unable to attend the open house but wish to provide feedback for the project, the City welcomes comments and encourages you to share them with an email to: Haymarket_Plaza@eauclairewi.gov.
