The K-9 fund was started in 2006 as the Eau Claire Police Department had a need for additional K-9 dogs, however, no traditional government funding options had been available to expand this program.
The Eau Claire Police Department has maintained one K-9 unit since 1990. Since that time, we have found that the K-9 unit is an extremely important asset to our department as he assists patrol officers with dangerous tasks thereby increasing both police and officer safety.
K-9 dogs are very well trained and very well controlled by their handler. The dogs are also very friendly when not working and doing community presentations such as:
How they perform narcotics detection
The different ways that suspect location and apprehension can be done
Their abilities for search and rescue of missing persons
Ways they are able to provide for increased public and officer safety on a daily basis
Our K-9 dog (and handler) enjoy doing these public presentations as it helps the community understand the wide range of positive service functions that a K-9 dog is able to provide.
